McCain Takes the Lead!

John McCain has taken the lead over Barack Obama for the first time in the general election season. Reuters/Zogby has John McCain up by 5 points. This is a significant turn around for Sen. Obama who was only weeks ago ahead by as much. This happened for two reasons:

1) John McCain’s superior performance at the Warren Forum. While latte liberals will still snub their nose at it, the reality of the matter is that Sen. McCain did really well and convinced a lot of wavering conservatives and independents that he knows how to handle these issues. Obama largely waffled and offered complex answers to avoid the questions.

2) The Georgia crisis has reflected that not only is the world still a dangerous place, but that McCain was right about Putin and Russia, when both the Bush Administration and the Democrats were wrong. McCain is a cold warrior – he knows how Russia operates. My generation has largely grown up in a post-soviet world that has forgotten Russia’s imperialistic tendancies. Even a British MP for the Liberal Democrats admitted that McCain’s analysis of Putin was correct and that Conservative Party Leader David Cameron was correct to rush to meet with Georgia’s president, while PM Gordon Brown and his administration dragged their feet.

Once again, McCain has been proven right, and the American people are begining to realize this. As a response, expect Sen. Obama to announce his VP selection (which is looking like Gov. Kaine of Virginia – not as good a choice as Sam Nunn, but Obama seems to like him) within the next few days. Sen. Obama is meeting with Gov. Kaine tonight. He is also apparently going to Indiana after, which could mean that he is going with Sen. Evan Bayh. Two senators don’t make a right, so I don’t think that’s the best pick either.
